New article in Science | Release of mineral-bound water prior to subduction tied to shallow seismogenic slip off Sumatra

IGV's Jan Backman is co-author of a study published in Science showing that the plate-boundary fault rupture during the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman subduction earthquake extended closer to the trench than expected, which increased the earthquake and tsunami size.
