New article in Nature Scientific Reports

by Rienk Smittenberg (as second author)

The article gives more insight in the environmental factors that dictate the distribution of a group of molecules called ‘tetraethers’, produced by archaea and bacteria. This distribution is often used to reconstruct past surface water temperatures, using empirical relations found in the open ocean. We looked into the influence of water stratification and anoxia, and found that this can greatly influence the distribution of the tetraethers - thus biasing reconstructed surface water temperatures from anoxic basins.
