Postdoctoral Fellow in Geology/Tectonics

Project description
Climate-controlled mountain building in the Southern Alps, New Zeeland.
Over the last two decades the mutual feedback between climate and orogeny has added an interdisciplinary component buildning and became a major theme in the Earth System Science. The Southern Alps of New Zeeland are one of the best targets for climate/tectonics research because they are young, pristine, active orogen undergoing rapid uplift, have been subjected to the Quarernary glacial-interglacial cycles and have developed a pronounced rain shadow at some stage in their evolution since about 10Ma. We try to answer the question when this rain shadow was formed.

Main responsibilities
We try to answer this important question by constraining the cooling history of rocks and detrital zircon fission track dating on the windward side, fault gouge and stable isotope work on the leeward side and by thermo-kinematic modelling. We will establish rates for eastward growth of the Southern Alps, thereby showing new links between climate, mountian buildning and natural hazards.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

Additional postdoc experience is highly beneficial. The successful candidate should demonstrate experience in low-temperature thermochronology (especially in young, detrital settings) sable-isotope analysis, thermo-kinematic modelling and expertise in New Zeeland geology/tectonics.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. The perceived ability of the applicant to successfully pursue the research. Special emphasis is put on the applicant´s knowledge and skills within the subject area, ability to express their work verbally and in writing, creativity, initative, independence, and capacity for working together with other researchers. The evaluation will be made based on the relevance of publications, past education and experience, the quality and ambition a cover letter motivating the candidate´s interest and possibly interviews.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
