About Geology and IGV

Geology is the study of planet Earth, the materials it is made of, the processes that act on these materials, the resulting rocks och sediments, and the history of the planet and its life forms from its formation to the present day. Geology studies the physical forces that act on Earth, the chemistry of its materials and the biology of the animals and plants that are preserved as fossils throughout Earth's history. Geology is a major academic discipline and provides crucial knowledge to the society about mineral resources and energy, ground-water availability, natural hazards and the variation and evolution of climate through geological time.

Geology has been studied at Stockholm University since 1881, when the Norwegian geologist W. C. Brögger was appointed as professor at Stockholms högskola (Stockholm University since 1960). The first professor to be appointed at the university was in mathematics (1878). Brögger’s appointment followed shortly thereafter. Since then, research and teaching in the geological disciplines has become a vibrant and successful part of Stockholm’s academic profile. Our existing strengths in research and teaching bring classical geology together with geochemistry and marine geology/geophysics.
